Hi, I've had my van 3 years and every time I start it the battery light stays on. If I blip the throttle though the light goes out. Don't know if that's what's happening to yours but if it is it's never been a problem for me. Hope it helps! Good luck!

Sometimes on these alternators they need a bit more speed / encouragement to get the magnetic fields set up & coupled (or something technical sounding)... so won't generate a good voltage until they've been over a certain speed.

Alenap, the alternator you are using with the black connector held in place by a spring clip is a Lucas alternator the other wil be a Delco best check with a volt meter should be getting 13 to 14 volts when engine is running.

I have been under the van again, and the earth lead it connected correctly to the block, but the light still stays on, even at high revs. It is only showing 12 volts at the terminals so I am thinking its knackered. .

A grand day out

Well tested the alternator yesterday and it's knackered. Worked intermittently so bought a new one. No farting around that way. Will keep the old one and strip it to investigate. Not much more could be done this weekend. The brakes need a check over prior to an Mot but until I get my alternator it can wait. Had a small fire underneath caused by the radio suppressor wire being too close to the exhaust manifold. Bit of a mad panic for an extinguisher, then not realising it was a powder one it looked like a fight in mcdougalls flour factory. The whole of the van window, engine bay and part of the interior is White! Better than black and crispy tho! Ironicly the fire had gone out seconds prior to the use of said fire extinguisher as the engine was switched off and it was only the plastic coating that caught alight!!
Today saw a trip to Beaulieu in a Morris Marina. Auto jumble, managed to buy rear wheel cylinders and rear brake pads. My friend and I entered a Lancaster insurance competition and inbelievable but my friend won!! £200 worth of tools! So well worth the £9.20 entry fee. Hopefully next week will get the Mot booked as it needs to be ready fir Ardingly.

MOT booked for Monday. Jobs this weekend are fit new alternator and change brake fluid. Test drive around the block and we should be ready! Slight concerns there may be rust issues somewhere I haven't been able to get to yet, as the lift is currently blocked by the donor van, but that is another bridge to be crossed when I come to it. I shall stick some pictures up when she goes on her maiden voyage!

New alternator fitted, and we are charging normally now. Brake bleed tomorrow. And a well needed wash! Planning a trip to Scotland to find out where my Grandad grew up. Should be a baptism of fire fir the old girl!!

Show us some pics Alena!

I thought you were going to be giving her a test pootle about today and I managed to arrange a twenty minute escape-from-the-family pass to go and look for some tyres. I kept thinking I'd see you coming in the other direction.

I have put five of my club spotting cards on CF1s over the last few weeks, the most recent was a white camper on the seafront by the King Alfred centre on Friday. There seems to be a bit of an upsurge in Beddies on the road round these 'yer parts now. I like that, but I really do hope they don't become the next 'trendy' van to have like the Volkswagens are.

The unfortunate thing is my insurance doesn't start until tomorrow to coincide with the Mot! If you go down The Gardens you may well spot her on my driveway sometime after lunch though, as the brakes should be done and I can get her out the garage and give her a wash before tomorrow! I saw there was a CF 2 by the bp garage the other week. There is a yellow CF in Small Dole and another one on a farm near Ansty! But between here and Brighton Station where I work there are at least 20 VWs so I don't think we need worry!! I would think there are thousands still registered of those and probably half as many of us. I wonder how you find out from the DVLA how many are still registered in the UK?

Not fail!

Well the old girl failed. Can't say I was surprised either. I took her for a long run prior just to get the feel of her. On the flat not too bad. Then we went up hill. Or rather didn't! Burping, coughing and backfiring! Decided the carb needed tuning and the timing doing. Left that for the Mot station to do. So unsurprisingly we failed on emissions! A small amount of welding by the rear spring hanger and the indicators decided not to work when tested! The bloody things worked all the way there!! I told them that I thought that was the fact that none if the switches had been used for a year! Hopefully I will get her back later this week . She did drive and handle quite nicely considering the time she had been laid up!

Hey Alena, I cycled past the garage this morning and there she was, up on the ramps being worked on. She looks really nice... she's in much much better condition than mine (You said you thought mine looked better when you saw me driving along that one time - mine only looks in good condition when moving at speed from a considerable distance).

She looks like a classic. A fine old piece of kit... I can't wait to see her trundling along the seafront some time soon.

She Passed!

;D Well got a call today and she has finally passed her MOT and is back home. I am sadly £377 poorer and £215 tax too!:B Not to mention the insurance! She is still running a bit lumpy, but luckily I had the spare carb from the blown engine and that is now on there. The garage said that maybe a long run will settle her down due to the long period of being laid up. Only time will tell. She can have some lead replacement/octane booster when I next fill up and no supermarket fuel will go near her. Made my Metro run like 5hit.
Next on the agenda will be to sort the body work and make sure she doesn't get any worse. The patch welded on the rear wheel arch by the garage for the MOT is less than pretty!:# At least it got her mobile though.

Latest Pictures

I have taken these so the insurance company can get me the agreed valuation and not book price. I think she looks really good in these!

Hello. the van's looking good there.
I'm a bit puzzled by the metal strip around the gutter line on the roof. Something to attach an awning onto?

t0neloc - The metal strip around the gutter line is an attempt by the previous owner to improve the gutter performance. Most of the leaks seem to originate here. There are little grooves for the water to flow through, though how well it works will be seen over time. I do have leaks still but am not sure if they are from the gutter area or side windows. I plan to remove both side windows like I started on the donor van (see previous pictures), as I already have the stainless screws and new wood. The cab doors leak (don't they all!) and rear door area too. I have new rear doors too. They are a project for the coming winter though, as I know if I start something now I will lose the summer camping!
Tim - She looks the part but still has some running issues! I am not sure if they are carb or ignition system related. I aim to try new leads, and dizzy cap first but I am sending one carb off to see if it can be rebuilt. As I now have two of everything, I will get the old rad re-cored in Newhaven too, and see if the old alternator can be rewound or just needs brushes. I have been out in her every weekend so far but only round the Brighton area, so good run up the 27 might be kill or cure! The sodding rocker gasket is leaking already too! I thought I had done all in my power to prevent that one, but alas it leaks right over the exhaust, so after 5 miles when I stop she has a tendency to smoke and look rather like she is on fire, but that is just the oil on the joint in the exhaust! Makes an interesting aroma in the van too.:B

Ach, my rocker gasket had started haemorraging too. It was one of the things I had done at Portslade along with the MOT stuff. Who are you sending your carb off to? I want to get one or both of my ICTs off to see if one (or two) good one(s) can be rescued from the pair. If you had a place you knew and trusted let me know. There was one place I contacted out of the back of Commercial Classics Magazine but he didn't seem quite legit when I discussed it with him. Needed my card details over the phone, wasn't an established business just an individual with a PO Box, and would basically have my carb and my card details and could take up to two months to do the job. Yeah, errr... no thanks pal.

Tim, give Southern Carburettors a ring on 0208 5402723. Got the number from Speedy Spares - they recommended them. Not had a chance to do that yet so let me know if you ring them, what they say. I will probably get round to it next week as I have a well earned week off!

Hey Alena, are you thinking of doing the Marlowe Regatta meet this weekend? Its just round the M25 and up the M40 an inch or so. If you were thinking of it, I'm driving up on Saturday morning... we could go in convoy, just in case one of us breaks down*

* Disclaimer: It should be noted that if one us did break down, I'd be about as useful as a ceramic cricket bat. But I could at least hold your coat while you fix the problem.
