What next! Will my van ever run right!

Spent yesterday fixing vans. Firstly my dads Land Rover. New rear coil springs and brake pipes right across the back. Easy job!
Then to the CF - now known as the Blunderbus! Thought I would try and cure the intermittent running - she was misfiring under load. Bought new leads, plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm, points and condenser. With the aid of a friend ( to complete the two vans the same day, all the above were changed. Ran fine for a while. Notice a slight fart coming from the exhaust - blowing a little around the joint between down pipe and rear section. Also changed the air filter and parts of the airfilter box that came with the van.
Then when my dad came round and asked how we were doing, the blooming thing runs like cr4p. She is now misfiring at low revs if you push quickly on the accelerator. If you increase revs slowly she is fine. Then sometimes she sounds like she is running on 3. I have looked at the dizzy and the cap seems to wobble slightly from side to side. It does this with all the caps I have, like the plate isn't flat. Does anyone else have this problem? On previous caps there has been wear on only one of the poles at the top - I am wondering if the shaft is iffy?
One of the plugs seems to be a bit rich and the others not so bad. The carb was set up for the MOT and she passed emissions but does that mean she was leaned off the get through? I have the old carb and was planning on ordering a rebuild kit from Dellorto to see if the carb is the issue!
I have tried running it an removing one lead at a time, sometimes there was a difference and other times none! Tried with and without the vacuum advance connected, tried timing her up and moving the dizzy side to side. The only difference that made was it either cut out or ran badly faster!!
I am at my wits end with this van! Starting to realise how much simpler my aircooled stuff was!
So I have had to walk away today and concentrate on something else, so I have put my Austin Maxi battery on charge, and done a trip to B&Q for a bookshelf.

Check the small wire that's attached to the condenser screw & disappears under the contact breaker baseplate. If it's broken then the effect is the engine trying to cut out under load.

Make sure your rotor arm is level.I had similar problems when I had the old points one.
To start with I screwed up one side of the arm and then the other, this made it sit just out of true (not visible to the eye. It ran on 3 as the arm was just missing one of the contacts.

Took Gethin to come and show me how to do it properly and in about a minute it was fixed!
You need to screw up both sides so that the head of the screw is just touching the arm but it can still move. Then do up each side 1/4 of a turn max at a time to keep it level.

Still won't run!

Had the week off this week. Been trying everything to get the damn van to run right. Tried the rotor arm as suggested this made a little difference but still misfires under load. She rocks over beautifully on choke tho! Carb stripped and rebuilt. Dizzy played about with, advanced or retarded still runs like cr4p!! Wits end was reached on Monday. Had to have a day off. I checked the little wire and seems ok. Still attached but the sheath is a little cracked. Would that be the issue? Is there somewhere I can buy a new dizzy? I have replaced everything else! New plugsx 2 did those twice in case I had bought a crap set, new leads, condenser, points, alternator. What else can I change? The rotor has been changed twice and the dizzy cap too. I am wondering about the dizzy itself as the caps keep getting grooved on one terminal

Check that cap clips actually hold the cap firmly enough so that it can't wobble.

Distributor mainshaft might be bent. This will show up if the points gap is checked on all 4 cam peaks; look for more than 0.004 in. (0.1mm) variation.

Also check for sideways play of mainshaft in bushes (with rotor attached) & for good measure side play in contact breaker baseplate on top bush.

Hi. Please accept my apologies if this sounds like I'm teaching you to suck eggs. I had the same type of problems and realised it was my fault!

Going back a few steps & assuming you've got the AC Delco dizzy;
with the engine turned off the distributor cap should not be capable of wobbling unless you're really trying. There should be notches in the dizzy body and corresponding flanges in the cap to lock it in place. Even without the clips being fastened you should not be able to twist the cap in relation to the body.
If you can then you need to identify why this is possible.
1. Rotor not fastened down correctly? - It's more easily done than you think. I found that if you do not pull up the fly weights whilst you screw down the rotor it is VERY easy to get things wrong. Follow the tip in a previous post and ensure the weights are lifted.
2. Rotor on wrong way round? The bottom of the rotor has a square and round peg that should correspond to the holes in the top of the shaft/weights. This ties in with the thing above. If the pegs don't engage then the rotor will sit high and probably at an angle but there is enough play for you to get the cap on and make it run.

If these are OK then look a bit deeper into the other solutions offered.

regards
Tony

Finally we have lift off!

After an agonisingly long week, we finally have the Blunderbus running. Thanks to all on here with there hints and tips.
All I have to do now is get another rocker gasket and replace the gasket in the middle of the carb to prevent any fires and I am away.
She sounds great now it is all sorted, I can't believe that she ran at all set up the way she was - let alone got through emissions! See my other thread re the dizzy cap to understand!

Agreed valuation

Received a letter back yesterday from my insurance company. They have agreed that the van is worth £1500. So not too bad I think.

Another rocker gasket in the bin today. Lucky I bought 3.
Followed all the advice on here regarding what I was doing wrong, and although I may still have a little weep to the front I am hoping it is now good enough to run. I did the bolts up exhaust side first and then the hard to get to ones, using half a tube of instant gasket between both sides of the gasket first to help sit in position. I found it very hard to judge when tight enough was! So I decided that when the instant gasket started to appear that was probably it so stopped tightening! I have driven her to the local tescos and after stopping she didn't look like she was going to spontaneously combust so hopefully she is now ready for my planned trips!
Fingers crossed for tomorrows trip to Ardingly. Will post some pics afterwards.

Managed the trip to Ardingly for the vehicle show today. Only CF in the pay on the day classics. There was another CF in the auto jumble though, I think it was a dormobile conversion on a L reg. Blue and White. Bought some rear light lenses as spares for£8.50 and wheel bearings front and back for my Austin Maxi. Great day out, my dad was exhibiting with the vintage horticultural and garden machinery club too. Dogs are knackered and barked at everyone. The fridge works great and kept our drinks nice and cold. Even got asked if I hired my van out! Now there is an idea for the future!! No big oily puddles under the van either. Hooray!

Progress

Been off here for a bit, really busy at work and no time for play.
Bought a second hand gas heater for the van to go where the original one was. Need to make a trip to the yacht chandlers to get some gas hose and fittings now though to connect it back up. The pipe is still under the van but has been cut and pinched up, so need to remedy that and find a hole to use to poke the hose through to meet up with it. I will get some photos when I am done. I am hoping to get that all done before a trip away in November.
Bought more sealant today to waterproof the gutter for the winter. Don't think I will get to weld that bit this winter so that will have to do. The wheel arches are a bit more serious though so will probably do those this winter.
Took the van out today for a drive, and even after only 3 weeks of inactivity the brakes had decided to stick! Not badly though so I think she will have to overwinter in the yard with wheel chocks and not on the road with the handbrake on.

Just a short update, been working far too hard with little free time recently. Have managed to get some small bits done though. I took the spare wheel carrier off a few months ago and have rubbed it back to metal and under sealed it to death. It has now been refitted with lots of grease on the bolts and chain. Makes so much more room in the back now and I don't have the wheel stuck between the porta potti and my toolbox! Also fitted a stereo. Found a pair of old speakers on the compressor shed floor from a car I scrapped and although meant for a parcel shelf I removed the big speakers and chucked the little tweeters and they fitted nicely under the dash corners held up with little brackets. Very tidy and out of sight! Next job is the heater in the back needs re piping. Next weekend maybe when I am doing the valve stem oil seals on my metro. Might get a minute then! Short days don't help much now.

Managed to wire my stereo in so it only works while the engine is off. Back to the drawing board.

If you want the stereo to work permenantly, so you can have it working when the engine is on or off, just join the live and permenant live together, and wire them to the battery with a fuse, that's what's been done in ours, and it works fine

Funny that, I ended up doing that yesterday. Ran a wire under the mat straight back to the battery! After having looked at all the empty plugs under the dash first! Works a treat now, and I can take the fuse out easily when I lay her up!
