Why not wire a seperate switch in on the live from the battery? Saves taking out the fuse all the time.

I tend to use those active blade type aerials on my stereos for better signal quality so I wire that to the switch aswell. Im ny other camper I had the stereo wired to the leisure battery too.

That thought has crossed my mind because at the moment the aerial is disconnected. I have ipod and cd only. I am in a battle with the old aerial, it refuses to part company with the wing! I have a nos electric aerial with the switch combined to put on in its place. I tested that and it works a treat - i just need to fit it!

the ariel snapped off our wing the other day, need to get a new one, but need to unbolt the old one from inside the wing first, thought of using a plumbers tap spanner or something similar to unscrew it (assuming it is just bolted in)

Most aerial's have a nut on top and all you need to do is hold the inner base to stop it turning.

If the old Aeriel is scrap why not carefully saw the top off just above the wing then you should be able to tap the rest through the wing ...

Hey Alena,

You drove past me outside Woodies diner this morning about 9:50am. I was really excited about seeing another Beddie and was waving like crazy before I realised I was in thick traffic driving a Ford C-max.

Your van looks really really nice. Good job. I still want to meet up... do you fancy meeting up tomorrow (or today if you read this Saturday) mid-day for a van-mooch?

D'Oh!

Tim, really sorry, didn't read this till now! I did walk past yours on Halloween though! Next weekend i should theoretically be about at some point if you are free? The same thing happened to me a while ago - you drove past me and I was in my little blue Metro with a big smile on my face!! Waving would have been fruitless!! Catch up with you soon. Met another CF club member the other day, and took my mum along for a day out in bournemouth at the same time. She liked the van as she got a cup of coffee and cheese on toast.

New Doors

I have sat here this evening crying with laughter at the posts on here. It has made my day after a really poo week. That said I did go on a expedition last weekend to pick up a pair of used doors for the van. In an Austin Metro with a roof rack. All the way to junction 22 of the M5 from Brighton. They fitted on the roof and looked rather like a huge whale tail from the 1980s. Sadly they didn't help the car go faster or stick to the road better. They did get home using much less fuel than taking the van would have done though. The lovely couple that sold them to me from ebay were trading in their van for a Hymer. Their van is now on ebay at the moment. Whoever buys it will be onto a winner. The chap put an LPG conversion on her, electric windows, it has a modern cassette loo and shower etc too. It has a fibreglass bonnet and was really well looked after. Anyway, the doors are already stripped but very oily so I will need to spend a couple of weekends cleaning them off so that paint will stick, and then getting the local body shop to repair the small amount of rust on the bottom. When the weather warms up I can think about a respray and transferring the door furniture over.

Palmeira Bodyshop

Tim, the little bodyshop at the bottom of the road near you. They are quite reasonable. I paid £250 for the hole in my metro and having a dent pulled, including paint. I am going to get the paint done at home tho this time and just get the panel welded to save even more money. I have a mate at work who is an ex sprayer that does work on the side - my house is an old garage so I still have all the compressor and pipework to spray at home. The more prepwork you can do yourself the more money you can save.

Its getting to that time again

Groan.... MOT is looming and the Sunny South Coast has been taking its toll on the lower parts of my van. Problem is CF's are infectious and my friend Paul has just taken the plunge and bought his own van. He has joined the site too. He bought a bargain CF2, which for all intents and purposes needs very little of the 'major welding required' that the bloke thought it needed on ebay. So I have been spending most of my free time helping him out recently, with nasty laminate removal, carpet laying, cleaning and then on to curtain making and seat upholstery. I am jealous as his van is an all fibreglass autosleeper clubman - so has far less of the issues that my van suffers from. Anyway when his is done, he can help me with the rust removal and treatment planned for my van.

Holes

Well I have the week off this week, the idea being that I get the van through the MOT at the end of the week. Trouble is what looked like a few rusty marks has turned into a lot of rusty holes. The bonnet has given up the ghost too. The Bedford badge in the middle practically fell through a hole of the same size today. So I decided to tackle that first. I have the spare bonnet from the graffiti van. So I have had a look at that and its much better and should be an easy swap. Only trouble is the appalling paint job. I bought some foamy gritty wheels for the drill and some flappy discs for the angle grinder and set to the bonnet. Thank God I wore safety specs. I was white, the drive is white, the van is white (including the windows.
That said it was oddly theraputic. I now have parts of it back to bare metal - there are some bits that will require a little rust treatment, but I have some stuff that was recommended in Practical Classics to stick over those bits before paint. After all the cleaning off with power tools I had a quick wipe over with some thinners to get rid of as much of the dust as possible. Tomorrow I shall set up some trestles and get busy with some wet and dry to get rid of the scratch marks and prep for paint.
The main body of the van can also have a bit of rust treatment tomorrow too. It does need some serious welding around the arches and I discovered they are mainly made from filler. I have ordered myself some 1.2 Mild Steel, and I am going to start small and work up to the complicated bits. I have a guillotine and a folder so they should help but I am a little unsure of bending in the curves required for the arches. I think maybe a bit of practise will be required here. And a fair amount of patience.
While I was there I notice my carpet underlay in the cab is a little damp. My friend Paul helped me get that and the sound proofing out. And underneath there was....
more rust. The worst of it though is on the plate that the gearstick comes through. Also under the seat bases and on the steps. So they will be done too.
I shall take photos as I go, and stick these on as and when I get time.
One thing that has gone my way though is the weather! I picked the perfect week off!!

Thinners are okay for getting rid of the dust if you can get it off before the thinner evaporates.I'd recommend tack cloths to make sure you get it all.Google search here or B&Q do their own brand.

Today I went from this

to this

The second photo is after a coat of red oxide - this was rubbed back off to show the low spots, then body filler was applied really thinly in the low spots, left to go off and then rubbed back with a selection of sand paper of various grades and both wet and dry. Cleaned off the dust with tack rags and sprayed with grey primer. Same to do again before I am happy though, as the ridge on the leading edge still isn't as good as I'd like but its getting there!
I now have an 8 by 4 sheet of 1.2 mild steel to do body welding, and with the holes I have found in the rest there should be plenty of it getting used!
