Hi Mailhart, first i have to ask why you want to replace the diesel engine in there now? i have a 2.3L cam-in-head type diesel and think its perfect, it has so much torque, the 'slogging' power that i'm sure would allow you drive it up the side of a house! To get a major advantage over your current engine it would probably mean fitting a new generation common rail diesel, don't know much about these except they appear complicated. you can potentially fit any engine in your Bedford, it all depends on how much mechanical knowledge, time, facillities, money you have. ---------------------- | Wed 28 Mar 2012 @ 00:37 |

Transit 2.5Di, pre-bannana engine will fit, but not without serious modification to front cross member and sump + maybe floor pan. I did it on my bedouin and kind of regret it. It has ruined the character of the van (but it now does 30mpg on the plus side). | Wed 28 Mar 2012 @ 21:40 |

In my last Beddie I had a 1988/89 2.5di Transit engine into a 5 speed type 9 Transit gearbox into a Salisbury axle. On a run it could return 36 to the gallon. It was noisy, smelly but exeedingly reliable. We had this for four years, averaging 15,000 miles a year. The crossmember has to be modified considerably but not beyond a professional welder. I found that if you spun the sump round and removed a small section you could put the engine further forward. Having said this, at the moment, I'm running a 2.3 slant engine on LPG through a Laycock overdrive gearbox, returning 20 miles to the gallon and as LPG is nearly half the price I find this more economical. As for characteristics, it wouldn't stop me from doing another one if diesel became more economical. Rae & Ann ---------------------- | Wed 28 Mar 2012 @ 23:10 |
