Starter Battery - '80 CB22

Dear all - First time poster so please be gentle!

Have just acquired a 1980 CB22 which has been off the road for 18 months or so and am going to try and coax it into life on saturday. It will probably need plenty of bits and bobs doing but in order to get it going, I'm going to buy a new battery and take it with me on the day. However, I have no idea what type I need to take.

This is for the starter battery, not the leisure battery. Does anyone know the 'type' number so I can make sure I have one with me?

Also, should the cab door key and the ignition key look / be the same key?

Thanks in anticipation!

Odd keys usually mean the barrel on either door or ignition has worn out at some point and someone has changed one. Not a problem and many CFs will be the same (mine is)

As far as the battery goes it doesn't matter too much. Anything with 300 CCA (cold cranking amps) or above should start it, but always nice to have a bit extra for those really cold morning - note, I am working on the assumption you have the 2.3 petrol engine. I use a Bosch silver series battery with about 350CCA, from memory it is a 52AH (amp hours) one. I picked it up second hand for £35. The size will depend on where your battery goes in your van (some under the floor, others under the passenger seat). If you have space you can over spec it to have plenty of juice in reserve. A big old diesel battery will really turn her over well, and you won't damage anything by going larger (just make sure its 12V !)

Just re-read your post, take something out of a diesel, even if you just borrow it, as if it has been sitting for a while chances are it is going to take some turning over to start and a bigger battery will give you a much better chance. Alternatively take some decent jump leads so you can give it a helping hand from your car.

Reason being it may take a little while to bring up fuel from the tank. I would also suggest adding a few cans of fresh fuel to the tank as the stuff in there will have degraded some what. Add an inline fuel filter before the carb to catch any gunk BEFORE it blocks the carb when you try and start it.

Thanks for the info Philbut

Excuse my total ignorance but it is a post-type battery? And it is under the floor and accessed through a seat locker - relatively standard dimensions? I'll just get the biggest I can find for sensible money!

Good tip on fresh petrol too. Is there a fuel filter as standard? If not, I'll grab one and fit it before firing her up!

Haynes Manual just arrived. Bit of bedtime reading...

Cheers

I can't promise interesting! But there will certainly be features in Practical Motorhome mag, on the PM FB page and also on the website.

We're also planning a few travel adventures in the van to remind people that 'affordable' is not a word to apply to motorhomes costing £40k+...

Under £1000 is far more affordable in my book! I'll obviously post a few pics and pick a few brains on here too!

Cheers

yep, a post type battery it is. It may be worth just checking the space before opting for a huge monster battery. I had to make some "adjustments..." with an angle grinder in order to fit in my battery, as the original compartment had been boarded over for the conversion and they had only left a hole big enough for a poxy little battery, and no chance of fitting a leasure battery in.

my battery man assures me that an 027 battery is the heaviest normal battery that fits in the same casing as an 075 and that is around 550CCA. 'Plenty' according to him, for a four-cylinder petrol. Probably with no compression ;-)

550CCA will start a transit diesel, so you should have no bother getting the old girl turning over with that!
