overdrive gearboxes

Hi,
Its pretty well known that the old girl has not left the drive for a couple of years now, but we are getting closer!
From when she was on the road I remember once on the motorways she felt like she needed another gear. The power was there but I simply ran out of cogs.
I keep hearing about vans with overdrive and would like some info please.
I have never owned a motor with overdrive but my uncle had a dolomite with it fitted. I remember it lowered the revs almost like a 5th gear.
How does it work (in layman's please)?
How much of a benefit is it to our beddies?
Is it better than a 5 speed box?
Are hens teeth easier to find?
Is it ridiculously expensive?
And is it really worth it?

I know that's a whole bunch of questions but please bear with me, I'm getting excited about the van

Steve

overdrive gearboxes are very rare and can command a hefty price ,

benefit of a overdrive box over a 5 speed box.

overdrive box gives you 6 speed box as you have overdrive on both 3rd and 4th.
this can make driving much more pleasant as you can flick the overdrive in 3rd
whilst in town driving so you dont change from 3rd to 4th all the time.

benefit of either overdrive or 5speed boxes are a better cruising speed and better MPG..

both need a different Propshaft and you need a decent engine to cope with the taller gearing...

1 thing to watch out for is getting the correct gearbox..
overdrive box out of a VX490 OR Cresta wont do as its got the wrong gearing and the gearstick is different, as for the 5speed box make sure that the 5th gear is not 1-1 it should be 1-0.85 ratio. or you will end up with a crawler box and no benefit ........

ive got an over drive on my wagon and its the first time ive ever had one and i love it .
cant tell you any thing about cost but it can save money on long runs and you can feel it in the engine which doesn't sound as if its going mad trying to find another gear lol

Overdrive

Hi, Just out of interest.Regarding CF overdrive, We have a 1979 CF AutoSleeper CB22 that we have had for over 26years and about 24years ago I fitted an overdrive (Laycock) from a VX490, had to alter prop shaft and move over my water tank, also fitted an overdrive gear knob from the Triumph 2000 onto standard gear stick. Has ever since worked perfectly and is brilliant, specialy when driving on long inclines such as we have encountered over the Alps.

Overdrive

Just to explain my last post, I never used the VX490 gearbox only the overdrive by fitting the longer main shaft into my existing box, ( I was an automatic & manual gearbox specialist in my younger days--now 80--) and the Gearstick knob on the old Triumph 2000 had the overdrive switch fitted to it, run cables down old gearstick and shrinkwrapped complete lever.Fitted warnig light on dash to show when in overdrive. Just a bit more useless information.

What Colin said!

Welcome to the site and thanks for the info.
I think I am edging towards the need for overdrive.
The van will be on the road in the spring, I have new wheels and larger diameter rear tyres to fit. This should effectively give me a slightly longer 4th gear.
I'll see how that goes before saving up for the overdrive.

Hi Guy, Yes the same couple, nice to talk to you again.
All's well with the beddy but for the fact that the ignition switch on the steering lock has caused a problem, but have located a new one so fingers crossed it will be ok.

I suppose it's just possible someone may have a pair of wind deflectors in their garage loft !

. . . . .but if I had a pair, I would not be marketing them under the heading of "Overdrive" . . . .
