Decisions decisions

So after my blow by problems, I took the Beddy in to a mechanic and it turns out that the piston rings have gone on one piston and has damaged the cylinder.

So it will need reboring.

The way I see it I have three options:

Option 1: Scrap/break/sell the Beddy - really dont want to do this, as im determined to get him on the road again. Cost is a problem though!

Option 2: rebuild of the slant 4 - Ive been quoted £1400 for a complete rebuild after which I would hopefully have a reliable engine! (petrol 2.3 vauxhall slant 4, only done 72 000 miles, so shouldnt be too worn.......famous last words!)

Option 3: Donor engine or conversion to a diesel - for the above price, I may be able to get a replacement more modern engine fitted although the mechanics have advised that until they know what engine they could fit the sky is the limit as far as the price is concerned, as the Beddy may end up needing new brakes (rather than the current oldschool drums) also the mounting brackets would more than likely need to be constructed for the new engine all new pipes cables gearbox etc etc so costs could escalate. On top of that,I have no idea what im getting with a donor engine or what its been through (I would assume that there is a good reason somebody has taken the engine out of their car and is selling it on Ebay/gumtree, and that worries me!)

Im leaning towards the rebuild, what do you guys think?

to convert your brakes to disc will entail getting replacement front hubs, and a set of wheels as they only made disks for the single wheel based van not twin.

If you want a diesel set up then you can have mine, this is a complete camper. you will have loads of spares as well as mine is also a twin wheeler....

If your interested them PM me .

In all fairness, if going for a different engine I wouldn't be too concerned with a brake upgrade. Not unless you planning on flying around at warp 9 after. The CF is a comercial vehicle at the end of the day with a braking system to suite, and they should offer ample stopping power.

Hi

so I asked them to go ahead with the rebuild of the slant 4.

The engine has gone to a local engineering firm who are reboring the cylinders and replacing all the wearing parts completely.

On top of that they are fitting a new cambelt so that they can be confident with the 1 year garauntee they give on the rebuild.

All in all £1400, pricey but I suppose considering the man hours and the cost of the parts, thats probably a fair price.

Cant wait to get Nedford back, so I can start stripping him out and rebuilding.
