Unleaded / Leaded fuel

Just out of interest, it must be about 10 years ago that I fitted an inline Fuel
Cat unit to my beddie and having travelled many miles abroad I have never had to use any leaded fuel additive, and is still going well with no problems, any further information on it can be found at http://www.fuelcat.co.uk

Can anyone explain how this in-line system can possibly work? It says it doesn't dissolve anything (isn't putting lead into the fuel for example), but makes a chemical reaction on the fuel. To do that, you'd need to put some energy or chemicals in continuously. It seems it's just a pass through tube of some kind?

The problem with unleaded fuel is that it burns quicker than leaded, giving higher burn temperatures which damage the valve seats. This product says it makes the burn even quicker and more efficient, so if that is true, should actually cause higher temperatures and therefore more wear.

The information on the website about separating fuel particles to reduce CO (partly burnt fuel) is real theory - that's why fuel pressures have risen over the years and why you get better combustion with fuel injection (it sprays fuel at high pressure into the air making a well mixed air/fuel 'mist'. I don't however see how passing the fuel through a pipe before pitting it into the carb fuel reservoir can have any lasting effect on it.

The in-tank versions look to contain some metals that probably dissolve into the fuel - maybe lead which would be very bad for the environment. This means that if you leave the van standing for a long time, lots of lead would dissolve in whereas if you use the full tank of fuel straight away you won't get hardly any dissolving... Either way very bad for the engine to run with too little or too much lead or it's replacements - you're messing with the octane rating of the fuel in an non-controlled process.

I'm very sceptical as to whether this really could work and would certainly never stop using lead replacement additive without far better proof that this is a viable solution.... None of the information on their website explains a satisfactory method for it to work that i'm happy with.
p.s. I designed diesel engines for Lister Petter and Petrol engines for Nissan so have some engineering knowledge to back up the above...

I've never bothered and never had any problems?? I have owned several Classic vehicles and have never used any lead additive or suppliment, not burnt a valve seat out yet.

All I know is that I fitted it many years ago and have done many trips across the water to Europe with no trouble, in the early days they were fitted to the Royal Cars, so whats good enough for them is good enough for me.
