Ignition Light

Ever since I had my 1970 CF1 (about 8 yrs) the ignition light glows under load. If the lights are on the lamp glows each time the wiper sweeps or if I put on the heater and the lights it will glow faintly all the time. Also the indicators are very slow on tick over and virtually static without the engine running. I have replaced the alternator with a new unit and cleaned every conceivable connection including all earth straps etc. the batteries are fine.

This hasn't presented an issue so far as I do hardly any night driving. However I would like to upgrade the lights in order to do so. My concern is that i won't have enough amps at the delivery end.

Any suggestions as to the cause of this would be very welcome.

Many Thanks in Advance

Mike

Ignition light

Hi mike, welcome to the club.I had the same as you light on under load.Firstly check the fanbelt. Then I removed all earth conections cleand off any paint or griam around the bolt holes. Before refitting the straps I coated strap and bolts with vasolean. This helps with the conection.I hope this helps.

most problems are down to bad connections or bad earth.
as you have done the earth side then you have few more sets of connectors to deal with .
first is the bulkhead multi plugs are a known corrosion problem and some times its been necessary to bypass a connection because of the corrosion.
next is the ignition switch connection plug and socket again can have corrosion or burnt connectors, the ignition switch it self can also cause bad connections.
lastly the dreaded fuse box A major problem area with bad connections and corrosion. few Beddy owners have had to replace the fuse box with a known good one because of the problem.

1 way of checking the alternator out is to use a 5watt bulb between the small terminal and the big one , if this glows under load you have either a faulty alternator or bad earth........

My CF220 used to do this. My main battery is located under the passenger seat and the earth strap was bolted to the seat box. the problem was that there was corrosion between the seat box and the floor. My ground strap now goes directly to the floor and I have fitted another which goes straight to engine.
