Fuel Gauge not working

My fuel gauge is not working and could therefore do with a bit of advice to fix it.

When I turn the ignition it rises from below red to just above it but doesn't go any higher even with a full tank.

One possibility is that the sender unit is sticking.

My gauge didn't work for years,never did find out why.I just used to work out roughly what miles I did & top up 10 litres every so often.As mine was diesel I had a can of fuel with me at all times though.

2 things to check.

there will be 2 wires at the back of the fuel gauge 1 will be supply other will be to the sender unit.
if you short this wire (sender unit) to earth the fuel gauge should go all the way over full.

if this works then you need to find an assistant and crawl under the Beddy .

you will find on the top of the tank a single wire, carefully remove this and with your assistant watching the fuel gauge and ignition on try making a good earth connection with the detached wire.
again this should cause the fuel gauge to read over full.

if this is correct then either the fuel sender unit is faulty or there is a bad earth connection on the fuel tank it self.

finding a good working sender unit is rare and you will probably need to fing an universal kit on ebay and retro fit that............

I bought a replacement sender with new clock and managed to fit it in the tank using the top of the old one. Setting the float arm is a lot of hassle and I think I had to tank the tank off a couple of times to get it somewhere close.

If I remember right the arm was very stiff and wouldn't move when the tank had petrol in so I took the baffle spring out which now makes the needle on the clock go all over the place. A lot of hassle yes but still better than having to write down mileages every time you fill up. I wouldn't have bothered but I have no trip meter on the speedo/clock.

I also (accidently) set the arm so when it is reading empty there is still about a gallon of fuel left so (hopefully) not much chance of running out (good for about another 30 miles).

I did all the checks that Gethin suggests (my gauge was reading full all the time) so decided to take the tank off and look at the sender. I used some Deoxit contact cleaner on the windings,did the assistant check and this seems to have worked.
