Auto-Sleepers

I found an old email yesterday which I thought I'd posted here but can't find,so perhaps I didn't.
It was a response to a request for any info on their cf conversions.

"Im afraid that Bedford CF conversion literaturebrochures and employees of the era have long gone.

As someone who has been with the company since 1974 I may be able to throw some MINIMALl light on the conversions of the time…

We started with a solid sided elevating roof model which retained the original cab seats with bulkheads fitted behind and a double bed across the vehicle…os had sink and wardrobe ….ns had cooker unit.

Next came the SB model which had lay flat cab seats to make up to single beds…..kitchen layout remained the same.

We then produced the same layouts but with a high top produced by Sheldon…. then later with AS designed roof.

Our first attempt at a CF coach built was the CB22 which had a body built by Martin Walters Ltd (I think)….. rear entrance with shower unitwardrobes at the rear ..kitchen units forward of this…..bench seatsdouble bed to the front.

Next to arrive was our first mono GRP bodied coach built model (SV100 I think) which had a “U” shaped lounge …(.on a wingprayer here now)……kitchen unit opposite …side entrance…..shower opposite .

Next was the” Clubman” fore runner GRP body with traditional layout …bench seats……fridge…. side door….kitchen across the rear……shower os opposite door .

GRP bodies were made to a design by William Townes.

Hope this helps…got nothing else anyway….

Best Regards

The William Townes mentioned is the chap who designed the Minissima.Back in the 70's my girlfriend at the time used to babysit for him.His workshop was behind a revolving bookcase from the tv room.I remember seeing the designs & a small model of the vehicle on his desk.Hadn't got a clue what it was though.
