Gauges

Info. Please, CF1 Fuel Gauge and Temp gauge. Engine cold and empty fuel tank. Needles on both are on zero and empty mark but turn on ignition and fuel gauge registers quarter tank full and temp shows about quarter increase in temperature. Should both needles return to below the lowest mark so that switching on ignition bring fuel up to register empty and temperature up to zero cold mark???

Sounds like the voltage stabiliser for the dash has gone faulty. The output should be approximately 10v. If the unit fails and puts out the full battery voltage then both gauges would be affected as you describe. The stabiliser is usually on the back of the instrument panel. rectangular can with three terminals.

Nice idea Andy but this is a 1979 CF1. No voltage stabilizer.

The fact that both gauges seem to move the same would indicate a common fault. The earlier gauges looking at the Haynes manual diagram appear to have earthed cases. Check you are getting a full low resistance earth on the instrument connector and you have continuity through to the gauges. Spray the connectors with electrical contact cleaner. There is a test guide for the early gauges and senders in the Haynes manual chapter 10 section 40. May the God of electrical gremlin chasing be with you.
