Bad connections.

Hi to all,

A fault has been bugging me on start up for a while now and today just by chance I found the dam thing, an out of sight wire in the starter loom which someone had decided a twist of the wires and a bit of tape would do just fine.
So I have now got a van that starts first every time, in the past it would start first time maybe seven times out of ten and the starter has been striped and checked, the solenoid has been striped and no fault found.
But there it was hidden inside that tape wrapped starter loom out of sight, but when I moved the loom over to check the connections to the starter were ok it then started first turn of the key.
And that has been like that since I bought the van but it only started to give me trouble at the end of last season, bad enough that the wiring is thirty two years old without having repairs like that hidden way.

Another one.

Hi to all,

During my wiring repair to the dodgy connection which I have soldered and covered with heat shrink I found a nice blue speed connector which looks like is has lived in the dark recesses of the starter under the floor for a very long time.
So I think that one will be replaced with another soldered heat shrink joint before the engine cover goes back on, then maybe that will give me start up first time every time.

Earth wires.

Hi Jim,

Like yourself I already have an earth wire from body to gearbox which I fitted last year when this problem first started, but having found these scotch-lock and twisted wire connections in the depths of the starter wiring loom I am living in hope that will be the end of the problem.

Vast improvement.

Hi to all,

A vast improvement in the starting since soldering and insolating these starter loom wires and connections, it has meant a bit of un-rapping and tapping up again in the most difficult of places.
But it is all worth it just to know that when you turn the key it starts first time instead of that heart sinking click, it did always start but you just wondered when it would totally let you down.
