Mike's old gearbox.

Hi to all,

I don't know how often some guy's check their gear oil level but who ever had Mike's campervan before him must have thought it was a sealed for life gearbox.
If the amount of ware and damage was anything to go by, most of the damage is down to low oil and very old dirty oil over a long period of years, the ware on the reverse shaft was so bad the reverse gear was able to tilt when meshed with the outer teeth of the first and second sincro hub damaging both sets of teeth.
The main-shaft was slightly bent and front and rear main-shaft bearings were badly worn as was the lay-shaft where it had worn through the hardening carrying the needle roller bearings, so a lot of movement able to go on which would have eventually meant that first and reverse gear could have engaged at the same time which would have caused a bit of a metal explosion inside the gearbox on the move.
So there are savings to be made by having the bottom cover removed to drain the gear-oil and clean away any debris laying on the inside of the cover plate and investing in some clean new gear oil maybe once every three years, but a yearly check on the level could save a lot of money.

Damage.

Hi Mike,

Safe to say that your old gearbox would not have coped with the journey you have just been on, it was passed the point where new gear-oil could have helped.
