Gearbox.

Hi Jim,

I have worked this type of gearbox is it a four or five speed box?
Would where you bought it from have another gearbox or would be quicker and cheaper to change back to a Bedford gearbox?
Or you could swap back to a Bedford gearbox while that one is checked over to see what is needed to repair it, I could send you down a Bedford one while we see what cost is involved.
It might not be repairable but we will not know that until we get a look inside, fragments of metal can do a lot of damage in a short space of time.
The loss of one gear is not uncommon but the thing that worries me is the noise you say started up before the gear stopped selecting.

Gearbox.

Hi Jim,

Got a gearbox looked out and wrapped ready to send and found a gear-lever so it is all wrapped up along with the gearbox, it is one of the high geared Bedford boxes with twenty teeth on four gear instead fifteen as it is on more common Bedford van box.

Gearbox.

Hi Jim,

This gearbox will be an improvement to your miles per gallon and give you lower rev's at cruising speed, now that cannot be a bad thing!

Hi Jim,

Your gearbox arrived at 9.45am so I now have a gearbox to send back down to you, and your money was there safe.

Type nine five sapeed gearbox.

Hi Jim,

Just taken a look inside your type nine box, WOW it has been to the dentist Jim, The howling noise was the front main-shaft bearing breaking up which then allowed four gear on the main-shaft to run away off line which ripped away all the main-shaft forth gear teeth.
A very clean job of teeth removal you would hardly know there had been any teeth there at all, the input shaft inner race will be destroyed as well, but I will know more once the whole box has been striped down.
By what I can see of the lay-shaft it looks to be in tact but there is metal shrapnel every where, was there oil leaking out into the bel-housing because the front oil seal had been destroyed.

Type nine

Hi Doug,I think the front oil seal was the reason it pack up.There is oil all over and the bell housing is thick with it so do you t5hink it's fixable?Cheers for now Jim.

Type nine disaster.

Hi Jim,

It is repairable if I can get the parts I need, so far I need a front main-shaft bearing and oil seal an input-shaft and fourth gear and the gaged roller bearing that fit inside fourth gear on the end of the main-shaft.
But there might be more parts required once I have finished the strip down and had a good check-over of the other gears and bearings.

Type nine disaster.

Hi Jim,

That's a lot of money to have lost plus the holiday you thought you were going to have in a campervan you had done a lot of work on, the only good thing about it being a Ford gearbox is that spares are still available (at a price) I have been checking around to see what it would cost to repair.
I hope you have kept all the parts you will need to change it back a Bedford gearbox, the box I have sent down should be with you by Tuesday.
In the mean time I will see what I can do with your Ford type nine gearbox it will all depend on cost!

Type nine/Bedford.

Hi Jim,

If you are back on the road and happy with the gearbox that's on its way to you then that is a problem solved, just got a lot of work to do fitting.
