Newbie looking at buying a CF250!

Hi I am going to view the attached Bedford tomorrow for a test drive and was seeking some advice if possible? Is there anything I should look out for?

Also we were planning on going to Switzerland / Italy on holiday in it in the summer but been told this may not be the van for the long journeys.... Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Thank you for any help - much appreciated!

Hi there!
Just to let yonu know, I´mnot an expert like other guys in this forum!
But I can tell from my short experience when we just bought a CF 250 last september.
First bad surprise was that the valveseats were gone a few weeks later (http://www.bedfordcf.co.uk/mboard/thread.php?id=14390&title=Valves%20and%20valveseats%3F)

I think its important to ask what the fuel situation was or is!
Converted cylinder head to unleaded fuel?
Using additives which do not help?

I´m just about to get mine back from crankshaft regringing, reboring etc. with hell loads of new (old) parts. It must have been left for years and then fired up for a few rides (thats what engineer said). Result: engine dead.

Next question: was it moved regualary and checked?

Just some things to think about. Maybe someone else knows a bit more where to have an eye on.
Apart from that, great van and if in good condition go for it!
;]
Cheers
Dave

Thanks BEDS + BEDFORDS

From what I have been told it has been used fairly regularly - but then who's to say it really has!

Which fuel option is best? I know the ad doesn't say but I will ask when I go to look at it. I heard they are not best on MPG!

I really love it, just worried I will get halfway on holiday and it will die on me

Bedford an acquired taste.

Hi christyjade,

I do use lead additive in my old Bedford CF which I bought seven years ago, the head has been off and the valves and seats check and lapped back in, no hardened seats were fitted.
Mileage when I bought it was 71,500 mileage is now 120,000 and just passed its MOT this morning and does about 15,000 miles throughout the summer season.
Things you should look out for check starting from cold when you drive it make sure the sincro-mesh when changing gears work cleanly, check how much speed you lose on a hill (driving at sixty MPH) check how much speed you drop, should only drop about seven miles per hour.
Check the cab floor and door-steps and have good poke around the chassis, while you are underneath check for oil leaks, make sure the engine is cold when you get there, take off the oil filler cap and see if there is a lot gunge and do the same with the radiator cap.
Don't be fooled by pretty paintwork!

Hi D S Joyce,

Thank you for your pointers. I have in fact just had a phone call from a local man I know through work who has a Bedford himself, and had seen I was interested in this one on facebook!

He has looked at it himself and it only has some small bodywork rust by the back doors apparently. He said it does need an additive which I can get locally, and said the chap who owns it now has spent a lot of money on it over the past few years (circa £5,000 apparently!).

He also mentioned something about an overlay gearbox?? or something? (I really need to up my game with mechanics I think!!)

Will be very cautious about buying though, I really don't want to be buying money pitt! thanks for the hints DS Joyce

Hi Christy,
As Doug said, just make sure the bodywork is sound enough and it's been looked after mechanically.
There's always something small to sort out on an old car/camper. Don't expect to buy it, get in it and never have to do anything on it. CF's are simple enough to work on especially if you have an older mechanic who knows his stuff.
There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to travel to Switzerland and Italy in a CF. Just make sure it is serviced and tuned properly and mechanically as good as it can be.
We take our CF to France and Germany every year. No problems. You can get unleaded additives at petrol stations in every European country or stock up here and carry it with you to give you peace of mind.
Have a look at this thread here. http://www.bedford-cf.co.uk/mboard/thread.php?id=14462&title=Roof%20mouldings%20for%20a%20Freeway
Mike who is from the Isle of Man and has a CF knows of the van and his mobile number is in one of the replies. Give him a call. Go check it out with a mechanic if needs be.
If you do buy it, I'd suggest plan a weekend in England just so you can give it a long run (at least a couple of 100miles) to see what it's like and if any problems come up before you take it on the continent.
Regards the gearbox, it may have a Laycock overdrive fitted which would be a bonus for cruising on the motorway. It effectively gives you a fifth gear. There would be a switch on the gearlever for that.
Cheers Frank

Gearbox.

Hi again,

It is most likely an overdrive gearbox in which case you will be able to select gear five with a switch on top of the gearstick like I have myself which allow me to cruise at sixty on lower engine rev's using less fuel.
If the guy has spent a lot of money on the Bedford it might be a very good buy for you.
Ask if you can see some receipts for the work done.

Hi XS Frank, it was actually Mike who gave me a call yesterday and when we went to view the owners also recommended we spoke to Mike! I think he is the IOM Bedford specialist!

It is an overdrive gearbox DS Joyce, yes they explained that to us yesterday.

We do really like the van, although we would want to get the rust looked at which we are getting a price for today. Neither of us are mechanically minded at all so everything would have to be done by a mechanic We both really love the van and if it was for just trips to the UK we would buy no doubt, but with the long journeys planned it is making us unsure (our trip this summer is going to be over 2,500 miles). I really don't want to get stuck somewhere with no parts available for us to get back on the move quickly!!

Parts.

Hi chistyjade,

It makes sense to take some parts with you no matter where you are going because there will not be any off the shelf parts available so get together some spare parts like hoses and hose clips and a piece of metal tubing so that you can if need be cut and join a split hose.
Other parts like fan belt timing belt and a good sealant for the cooling system if you should spring a leak, a spare fuel pump and water pump and a set of ign. leads a cap and rotor a condenser and a set of points, I carry all this stuff and a lot more besides.
But it could be the difference between a good trip and a very costly one.
