Magneto and timing.

Hi to all,

With the magneto working as it should and the timing set and marked and starting made a lot easier with the fuel priming system my only problem still to be put right is that tick-over speed not being slow enough to engage gears cleanly.

New Home.

Hi to all,

The small Ransome tractor is on the move to a new storage area in which work space and access will be easier and paintwork or maintaining will be much easier to get done.

coil sysiem.

Hi to all,

Managed to get a new battery to work the tractors coil fed starting system so it should be easier to start from cold, then switch to magneto once warmed up and the fuel is in full flow.
So instead of firing once in a full turn of the starting handle it fires four times, you just have to be ready for any kick back and let go quickly.
For a single cylinder 600cc engine it can give some kick, but worth it for the ease of starting, these small Ransome tractors are famous for being hard to start.

Hi to all,

The tractor safely moved to a new shelter and started after sitting idle for two years so all seems to be good, with better access it will be easier the get work done.

Pullies and ropes.

Hi to all,

A pully and rope setup to make it easier to roll out the tractor from its new shelter onto a ready built wooden ramp for ease of working on it, and it dies work quite well.
Fifteen hundred weight of steel is a lot to push round when it is on tracks it makes it hard work.

Back to that old tractor.

Hi to all,

Due to this lock down I decided really check out the whole engine of that old Ransome so I have taken out the engine so that it can be set up correctly due to the number of people who have messed about with it over the years.
Very surprised at how good all the internals are, showing very little signs of serous ware, only magneto and chain driven camshaft seemed to be out of sink and possible cause of erratic tick-over and difficultly starting.
So the engine is out and in the workshop until I have it set up as it should have been before so many hands had messed about with it since 1950.

Engine refitted.

Hi to all,

After working out and putting settings back to there correct position and alinement after which managed to get a first time fire out of it but due to heavy rain I had to stop, but should get back to it tomorrow if the rain allows.

Engine back in.

Hi to all,

This must one of the easiest engine's to take out and put back into the chassis and lucky for me it is a one man job, weighing about two hundred weight.
Once in the workshop and on the quid bike lift to bring it up to a working height so that I could get the head off to check piston and valves and establish exact top dead centre.
This let me workout the start up position of the magneto and check the CB points and condenser as well as connections and wiring, with all that done it was time to put the engine back into the chassis.
All I need now is to get it started and running!!

Tractor carb.

Hi to all,

I think I might have found a suitable carb for my 1950 Ransome tractor it is a Brigs and stratten for a 12hp engine single cylinder carb which looks like it might just do the job better than the old SU I have on it at the moment.

New carb.

Hi to all,

The new carb arrived today for the Ransome tractor for which I will have to make a new adaptor plate for it to mount directly on to the cylinder head, so was on need for the old manifold as a manifold is all part of the new carb casting.
So an alloy adaptor plate would be best to match the alloy manifold that is part of the carb, it will also conduct the heat better than steel could.
So plenty of work ahead for the week and it might help the tractor to run a lot better and start more rely-ably.

Some progress.

hi to all,

Finished cut out the adaptor plate and drilling to match cylinder head and bolted into place, used two manifold studs treaded into the adaptor plate,
So the carb is mounted and fuel line on and primed up with fuel, just the coke and throttle cables to work out and then see if it has all been worth while.

All back together.

Hi to all.

Just about there Got all the parts made and fitted the worst part of the job was working out the set up for the choke and throttle connections, but not test ran yet maybe tomorrow after I get some more fuel.
Hope it has all been worth the work.

Starting.

Hi to all,

I am going to try and work out how to convert from starting handle to electro starting, a bit like the old aircraft plug in starter to spin the engine up to starting speed, should be interesting.

starter plan.

Hi to all,

Having had a good look at how this can best be done, the plan so far is to find a ring gear that will fit the size of the drive drum which looks like a large brake drum, inside there is two brake shoes on springs which at engine speed spin out and give you drive.
Once I find a ring gear that will fit the drum size I can make brackets to hold the starter motor to the inside of the hull against the steel side plate of the tractor body so that it can engage the ring gear teeth to spin the engine.
That is the plan once the eight inches of snow (and still falling) fades away.

Electro start.

Hi to all,

If I can find a 31 inch ring gear and a starter motor with a short enough body to fit into a very limited space this could be an end to the starter handle on this old Ransome tractor, to dam cold for outside work this week.

Engine back out.

Hi to all,

With the engine back on the work bench let's me keep the timing and carb settings corrected and get an accurate measurement of the flywheel to try and find a 30 inch ring-gear inside size, then find a starter motor that will match the ring-gear teeth, no one seems to give the inside size measurement!

Engine refitted.

Hi to all,

Could not get a ring gear that would fit for inside size or depth of tooth, but have managed to take this chance to set up the timing, a very difficult job on these old Briggs engine's with no manual to be had for that 1950 tractor, so engine refitted and started up so must have done something right.
I had hoped to get away from the starting handle but no suitable parts avail able.

Success is close.

Hito all,

With engine timing finally worked out and set and the new Briggs and Stratton carb fitted via its new adaptor plate it has been an afternoon of fine tuning and exhaust clamps, but the tractor from the Lochs watery grave at Butterstone is finally starting and running as it should.
The next test will be to see if it drives and stops like it should, my back garden is small to there might be a few fences damaged on the test run, because this vin-yard tractor has no braking system and no clutch so control is mainly through the throttle, or the fence!!!
