Soft ground.

Hi Beigebengy,

The ground is very soft sponge with a lot of moss so the tractor might sink a fair bit with the weight, tractor balance weights will be hung on the front to increase front axle weight.
But I will jack the Ransome clear to a level where I can check the track rollers are free and turning and see if I can get any drive to the tracks after doing that.

A lucky find.

Hi to all,

At the Kelso rally I found in the auto-jumble a magneto for my old tractor, still to see if it works it needs a good clean up and dry off but it is the right one and they are very hard to find.

Striping down.

Hi to all,

Tomorrow I should get time to strip clean and check over that magneto I found at Kelso rally, make sure it is working and the points are in good working shape and carrying a good spark and bumping out a high tension voltage.
Plus take another look at my generator which started to misbehave on the last day of the rally by failing to start!

Spare magneto checkover.

Hi to all,

Finally got around to checking over the magneto I bought at Kelso, some one has nicked one of the bob-weights and both of the springs!!
So I have made a bob-weight from steel plate which fits and works well but I still have find or make up return springs which might be a bit more difficult, have to rummage through some of the spare distributors I have kicking around.
On the good side the magneto does put out good voltage so not a total waste of twenty quid.

Return to the sunken tractor.

Hi t all,

Today I spent four hours raising the old Ransome tractor up out of the mud, first by digging down underneath the engine to get two blocks of wood in to support the jack followed by more blocks until the front end was clear of the marsh mud.
Then the same procedure at the back and once I had got enough clearance I was able to slide in two steel poles and then two four inch posts, so she now sits level about four or five inches clear of the mud.
I managed to get it started but the tracks are seized so no point destroying the clutch until the rollers in the tracks are freed off.
I have worked a route across the higher part of the field which will support the weight of a tractor to get in and lift the old Ransome and hopefully transport it back up to the road.

Rain rain rain.

Hi to all,

At this rate I think my old tractor will have started to sink again, maybe the all the timber and steel pipe will hold it above the mud!!

Sooner the better.

Hi Mike,

I quite agree the sooner the better but I am depending on to many other people for transporting it back down my own place, If I could get it out of there and transport it myself it would be here by now.

Abandoned due to weather.

Hi to all,

For most of this month the tractor rescue will have to be abandoned, already sitting in a wet-land marsh area is bad enough but with the rain fall of the past two weeks it will be impossible to get any machine close enough to lift it out.
With the ground so soaked that mature trees are toppling over and blocked roads it will take some time to let things dry out enough to start a recovery.

Tractor rescue.

Hi to all,

I met up will an old work-mate who now runs his own contracting firm and I have now asked for a price to use one of his machines to lift and load my poor wee Ransome and get it out of the marsh-land before it sinks again.

Tractor saga.

Hi Mike,

Well I have asked this chap for a price to get it to where I want it, He seemed to be quite sure it would be an easy job and with the right machine and he has the equipment that can do the job.

Hi to all,

My old mate Jim has decided to have a go at lifting my old tractor out of that marsh-land so we will see how that goes, I can only hope it is a success.

Tractor rescue.

Hi to all,

The tractor rescue has had to be put on hold yet again and the weather is wet
which will mean that ground will more than likely swallow all the timber and steel supports and let the tracks sink back into the marsh mud.
So far two would-be rescuers have let me down by not have machines available to get the job done and with the ground now soaked by a week of June rain hope is fading.
I hear tell of a heat-wave but here my thinks!!

All seems to have gone a little quiet... I hope alls well and the extraction has been completed. It would be interesting to know (??).

The song "Right said Fred" comes to mind

Getting the ransome home

Or another song that comes to mind is Johnny Cash and "One piece at a time", but the time taken and the distance walked or pushing a bog wheelbarrow may be considerable.

At last plans to a-foot.

Hi to all,

At long last a plan to try and rescue my poor wee Ransome tractor are set for tomorrow by means of tractor rear lift forks and a trailer strong enough to take implements and tractor all in the one load.
So let's hope it all works like Jim thinks it will, his first challenge is to get his tractor the sixteen miles up the A9 on a Saturday while we follow a bit later with four-by-four and trailer.
We will be very popular with all those trying to get up to Inverness!

Tractor rescue.

Hi to all,

It took us three hours and a lot of clever thinking and improvisation with chains slings and two by six batons plus a wooden sledge but we got the tractor out of the marshland and onto a trailer.
And we went back for three more implements that go with the tractor, all loaded and transported on the one trailer and brought the sixteen miles back down to Perth.
So now it is pressure washing time followed by waste diesel to help free off the tracks and rollers so that the restoration can begin to start.
