Hi to all,

I have got the old tractor back up and running after its miss-hap but had some trouble sorting out a misfire and found it to be the brand new spark plug just fitted two weeks ago.
My spark plug tester is an old magneto which spun by hand shows what quality of spark you have and the new plug was shorting off to the casing, once replaced the problem was solved.
So now colder spark plug has now been fitted.

Rebuilding.

Hi to all,

In spite of the foul weather I have managed to rebuild the fuel system using that SU carb bought last year and I hope I have cured all the air leaks and fuel leaks with new gaskets and an up graded adapter plate to give better fuel control.
So far untested due to more snow this afternoon, winter just will not leave.

Back to painting.

Hi to all,

With the Bedford finally passed its test for the year I have managed to get back to some paintwork on my old tractor after it tumble and tidy up some of the damage done.
The weather has finally warmed up a bit so the paint should dry quickly, engine wise it is still being quite unreliable as far as starting goes but I will get there.
Second coat of the red paint now finished second coat of blue still to be done, at the moment it is looking better than it goes.

Spark Plugs.

Hi to all,

From stating and running to a failure to start is due to spark plug failure, after fitting different recommended spark plugs and finding them to have failed after a short time of running I now have found one that seems to be up to the job.
The plug recommended by the owners club is a Lodge C3 or a Champion N7, at the moment it is running well on a plug listed for a Renault K4M engine which seems to be doing the job.

Hi to all,

Sunshine at last a good days work doing the second coat of paintwork on my old tractor and it was dry in just one hour with on things flying and getting stuck to the wet paint fantastic.
Round where it is now parked at the workshop door it gets a lot of sun, we just have not had any until today very pleased with the finished job.

Project complete.

Hi to all,

The Ransome tractor project is now complete and brought back from the dead in less a year, from a watery grave in Butterstone Loch to a renovated fully working machine and a good example of British engineering when we still made stuff.
Now said to be worth about £2,000 and I have through the tractor club a guy in Canada looking for one, he is collector of this type of British made machinery.
But I think I will wait a while and show it here in its homeland.

Tractor engine oil.

Hi to all,

The tractor engine oil has now been changed to the correct recommended grade SAE 50 bought on line because it was dearer at Kelso rally, they were asking £16per five Lts. I bought it online for £50 per twenty Ltrs.
So well pleased with that delivered to my door free of charge, good thick stuff it is too but maybe a bit too thick for the old Bedford.

Track adjustent.

Hi to all,

Most older tracked vehicles develop tight spots in there tracks with age use and ware, add to that poor maintaining and lack of lubrication and no adjustments made for different types of soil and it is no great surprise that a machine made in 1950 is showing some uneven stretching in the track joints.
The fact that this particular machine was left semi submerged in the march-land with the water of a loch lapping around its moving parts for five years and it is a wonder anything ever moved again, but with a fair bit of hard work it does.
So that has been the job for these last two days trying to even out the tight spots to get as close to a smooth free turning set of tracks as possible.

Eveing out the spaces.

Hi to all,

While trying to even out the gaps between the track segments to as close as possible to the recommended space between each one I found the some of the new bolts were a faction shorter than others, and all of them came out of the same pack.
This meant that to even out the gaps the short ones had to be changed, eight bolts on one track and two bolts on the other and handling these track with just one pair of hands is not easy due to the weight and the springing effect of the rubber joints.
So with the use of heavy duty cable ties, G-clamps and panel grips and quite a few bad words the shorter bolts were changed and the gap are now evened out to the recommended measurement gap.

Back up and running.

Hi to all,

After its tumble over the wall the Ransome tractor is now back up and running, the carb is now set up as close to perfect as possible but I think it needs a new dash-pot spring, a stronger one than that which is fitted.
In the old day of SU carbs these springs where colour coded, I think a red one would be the answer to the spluttering at higher revs. to control the rise speed of the piston in the carb.

Back onto the ground.

Hi to all,

My Ransome tractor is now back down off the axle stands with the correct engine oil in and the fuel mixture finally set as per lifting pin on that SU carb and running at tick-over very close to where it should be after throttle cable adjustment.
Most of the winkles are now out of the fuel and start up procedure, it has not been an easy conversion from Amal carb to SU through a made up adapter plate but once I added the manual fuel injection system starting is a lot easier.
I met a guy at the Kelso rally who had a Ransome entered and he said he could not get it to start after all the checks on timing compression and fuel mixture so I told him how I got around that problem by injecting fuel through a small tube into the manifold.

Replacement parts.

Hi to all,

Found a guy at Moffat rally who said he can get me a new needle and jet for the SU carb that is now fitted to the old Ransome vineyard tractor or a complete carb reconditioned and ready to fit.
He said he would be at the Albion rally at Biggar on the 12th of August so this could be the improvement in running and mixture control I need.

crab rebuild.

Hi to all,

The man from the Moffat rally let me down on the carb. for the tractor so I ordered the parts and rebuilt it myself with spindle bushes needle and jet plus carrier and the results are spot on with no air leaks and good control over the mixture and tick-over.
I just need to find the correct Lodge spark plug for it now and all should be good.

Sods law.

Hi to all,

Now that it is away too late to get the old Ransome tractor entered into the rally I have been offered two trailers to transport it on, just great!

Scone rally.

Hi to all,

At the Scone farming yesteryear rally on the 9th Sept. I found two Ransome MG type vin-yard tractors like mine but both in pristine finish better than the factory turned them out, and both done and owned in Scotland.
Unlike me these guy's had spent a lot of time and money bringing them back to life, however their tractors had not spent five years in a loch like the one I have tried to renovate, but very encouraging to see.
They would have put my old tractor to shame so it is just as well I had not got mine to that show.

Hi to all,

Insulation strips as fitted to the old Ransome's magneto can move and cause a short circuit against the body casing of the magneto, this strip is in place because the points and connections to them are very close to that outer casing.
But this can cause a fair bit of head scratching because it is hard to spot it has moved.
And this has been my latest problem but now that I know that it is there it will be my first point to check next time.

Priming fuel.

Hi to all,

Because of the original carb being broken with some parts missing I have fitted an SU 1 1/4 inch carb from an old Morris 1000, the problem is it has not got a priming button and for now I have a capillary line fitted in a drilling into the inlet manifold.
This setup does work but can get a bit messy so my plan is to run a fuel line off of the float chamber connection into the manifold with a shut-off valve on it so that once the fuel has been primed up that line can be shut off allowing
fuel to flow only into the float chamber.
This should make starting cleaner with no fear of spillage or risk of fire.

Fuel priming system.

Hi to all,

Pipe work all done and the system works well, just ordered a plastic fuel shut-off valve to go in-line so that once primed the fuel can be shut off to feed only into the carb float chamber, once that is in place it will make starting a lot easier and less messy.

Fitted and working.

Hi to all,

The in-line shut-off valve is now fitted and working a treat, which means that the injection of fuel goes into the manifold through a closed system without any mess or spillage.
Tried and tested this morning making starting much easier.
