Are the staples VERY rusty? (I am sure they are a little rusty due to age)...If not, then dont pull the ali off. The upper sheet of ali (containing the windows) overlaps the lower sheet. I doubt the lower sheet would just pull away - you would need to remove all the trims and fixings around the edges of the lower side sheet then slide this sheet downwards to free it from the upper sheet.

THAT is an awful lot of work to do and I dont recommend it unless you are completely rebuilding the van, or you have good evidence of major damp in the frame (when it becomes easier to repair from the outside rather than pulling all the furniture out).

re-sealing the trim strip is a very good idea - but please do check the window rubbers too.......'a stitch in time...' et al...

Hi Carl
Me thinks I will leave well enough alone, one end of the rot could extend behind the kitchen unit but its drying out and I may just put some preservative there and a little wood hardener ?
I am awaiting delivery of a damp meter so should at least have a better idea when I test there.
I really don't want to be probing too much as am afraid of what I may find...

A little progress

Mahogony inserted under window, glued and secured from outside with trim rail.
Trim rail sitting on a bed of mastic. Had to put wood filler in right hand side of window after aplying some wood hardener.

Well.....eventually finished the window after a fight with the vinyl which was sticking to its self after I applied spray glue outside prior to putting it on wall.

Both sides didn't look that neat so I made corner pieces to give tidy finish

Everything back in place except the blind

Now need to get back to the rustoleum roller painting. May get a holiday away yet !!

Continuing with roller painting......bloody flies, I am fed up picking them of the fresh paint !! Decided to get up on the roof and give it a clean as it had been under trees at my sisters house when Phil was rebuilding her, never went near the edge as I don't like heights. I used those special sponges which are excellent at removing grime.

Here she is with some painting still to do.......god its endless, my hands and fingers ache

Puting her into the garage on tuesday to get radiator welded, so maybe able to get away for a few days.......fingers crossed.

Had a check on the other big window.......one side feels a bit soft to me....oh no.......looks like another flippin leak !!!!!
I guess it will be ripping of the vinyl again....when will it ever end.
My patience is wearing thin, on holiday now and looks like more time spent sorting the bloody thing out.
Where is that box of matches......

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Meanwhile, think not of what needs to be done but of what has been achieved already.

Margaret - don't loose heart girl....
Think of it this way: once you have sorted out these little anoyances, YOU will know that they have been done and will not need doing again for a fair long while.
The satisfaction you will have as you sit beside a loch on a warm summers eve, outside YOUR van, rescued and put together by your own fair hand, sipping a little of what you fancy, will be immeasurable....

What you (and Phil) have achieved so far has been inspirational - you are on the last leg now. If there is a little softness under the other window, and the window isn't in any danger of falling out, then leave it for now and get the van packed and head off and enjoy a well deserved break in it. I doubt you will end up flooded out if it rains....

Make the most of your holiday and take a break away in the van.....

You know you deserve it!!!

Margaret had the leak in the radiator fixed on Tues ( £300!! )

Margaret has been away since wed . Went northwards in Scotland, but engine temp started to rise..stopped off and was assisted by a fellow camper, who tightenened the fan belt that was loose. All was well until she went southwards. Update is that the van overheated again in Castle Douglas. RAC man called, fan belt snapped !, so he is trying to source a new one. One other problem to note that there is a diesel leak. She hopes to make her way down to Leeds on Monday after a stopover......

I've got to ask: how does a radiator top neck re-solder get to £300?

Well........arrived at Shirley's house today. Managed to complete 700 miles so far.
The radiator was welded at the stub and he also noticed a crack at the filler neck......labour was 4 1/2 hrs at around £45 squid an hour, hence the £300 squid charge.
When she overheated the first time a nice man camping next to us called James used to work on Bedfords with his dad and he also was familiar with the perkins engine, he did think the fan belt was 'digging in' a bit though.Anyhow we managed another 300miles before disaster struck again, the RAC man did the same ie tightened up the belt and was going to follow us for about ten miles to make sure it was ok, however after about 2miles overheated , battery light on and I limped to the side of the road where we found the belt gone. The RAC man went away an got a new belt and we were once on our way.
