Ed.....thats a great idea, I could contribute a few breakdowns.....and thats not counting the 'nervous' ones.

We were lucky on that last breakdown because it was such a beautiful day and such a nice RAC guy all 6' 8" of him !!

The latest is the fuel pump is in getting fixed, hopefully get it back tomorrow so I can get home in time for work.

The saga continues..........

Good news, the fuel pump fixed.....bad news, £264 lighter !

Bad news, when setting of from leeds today stopped of at petrol station to get fuel...fuel cap wouldn't come off, had to prise it off with a hammer, and of course breaking it in the process !! Petrol station had a fuel cap thank god.

Next, after just about getting through Newcastle the temperature gauge started rising...managed to stop in a layby just as the steam was coming out from under the bonnet. Phoned the RAC, arrived within half an hour. He tightened up the fan belt AGAIN and then we were on our way.

Managed to get home 7 hours later.

I am getting a bit fed up with it all, couldn't be bothered taking a pic of the latest breakdown.....same old story.I don't know if I can take much more of it. Where's that box of matches.......

Looking back at when I fitted a standard width belt & comparing that with the 13mm wide belt that's on now I think that the alternator pulley is the villain of the piece: the pulley vee is too narrow & is cutting into the 13mm belt; it needs to be 13mm wide like the water pump & crankshaft pulleys. I'll see what I can find...

Thanks Phil, do you think an auxillary fan would be a good idea too ?
I am becoming very nervous constantly looking at temp gauge.

The fan belt problem seems to be the cause of overheating because it's only happened after the belt has worn & started slipping. An auxiliary fan shouldn't be needed once belt slip is sorted but fitting one shouldn't be too hard & then you'll have something to fall back on if ever the engine overheats: peace of mind anyway.

sorry Margrae you have had a couple more problems. I've just come back from a trip down the East coast but didn't have as nice weather as yourself for my breakdowns - replacing fouled plug in the pouring rain and then a bit further down the road the whole wiper arm snapped off . If only someone had taken a photo of that moment! Had to source another one asap. But we arrived home and that's the main thing. I hope you get your temp thing sorted.

You've got to hand it to her Shirley, that sister of yours, Margaret, is a game girl
You've got to give her 10/10 for trying.
Hope it's nothing too serious and she'll be on her way soon.

Odds are that it's the fan belt problem still with the alternator pulley vee being too narrow for a 13mm wide belt & also too small a diameter as I've discovered since finding a pulley with the correct vee width that also is about 3.5" in diameter (instead of just over 2" like the one that's on now) & more in keeping with what the Perkins 4.154 came with originally with having a relatively large diameter crankshaft pulley. Hopefully this will be the last trip with this problem because the alternator pulley is on the list of bug fixes.

Arrived safely at 19.30 (9 oors oan the road). The radiator stub hose was leaking , tightened by a very ugly AA guy, with a very broad geordie accent (Mags didn't understand a word he said !...lol)

Margaret is suffering from a stiff right leg and an aching right arm. There also appears to be a slight hearing loss , which I am sure is temporary !!!!

Ok, so it was a radiator hose ... they're both on the ToDo list anyway, along with fixing the engine oil leak (oh joy - TK gearbox to take out), seeing whether the engine intake can be silenced some more and having a serious look at altering the driving position to suit Margaret.

Margrae - you could do a review of all the breakdown people you have come across; rate them from 1-10

Would that be based on looks or capability?
