Well......she tried to make a run for it......but despite her best efforts she didn't escape across the border !!
Ralph had just been saying we need some ear muffs.....when suddenly there was white smoke coming in the cab !......a quick exit to hard shoulder and engine shut off. Bonnet open with water spray everywhere even in cab, couldn't see anything at that time. A few minutes later some very nice police motorway patrol guys appeared and asked if we were ok, even allowed me to use their mobile phone as I was having trouble with mine, and even called me later to ask if we had been rescued !!

Hose that had bloody big hole

AA guy cut off burst rubber and reattached then we were to head for next service station to check it was ok. Got going for a few minutes and same happened again...sh"t. had to then wait for AA guy to exit A1 and loop back

Taken to garage where they had 5 guys peering over engine (engine probably older then most of them !)After trying to fix we ended up like this...

He took us to Scotch corner services where we waited over and hour to be relayed back to Leeds by the AA

And so the tale continues................

So sorry to hear how this thread is turning out, after all that hard work. Hope it's just a perished hose & nothing more sinister.
As for the noise, that's just one of the joys of a diesel.

sad news about the van, but sure she will be back on the road and giving you the joy of the open road again, that 1st recovery truck is a wee bit wee to be piggy backing a twin wheeler though

Yep, the guy said it would need a bigger recovery truck...but was only taking me a few miles to the depot....where there were lots of bigger ones !!

Good news is that Phil has fixed the problem......a very very small crack in a small area of welding at the bottom of radiator, needed an eye glass to see it. The hose was just part of the problem.
Haven't taken her out yet and will leave the next escape attempt over the border to Scotland when I have a few days off work.

If you look closely you can see Phil pe*ing on my beddie....must be all that tea !!

Thanks Carl, she is a beauty and I love her. I am going to get some replacement lining for the engine cover and maybe make a padded cover for over the top which may help with noise.

Top hose repair is ok -

The problem in terms of finding the correct hose (i.e. without a join) is the difference in diameter between radiator & thermostat ends. Maybe one will turn up eventually...

Pressure test showed up nothing wrong with the core (actually in very good condition) -

but a dribble at the bottom of the radiator was enough to take it out & have a good look.

Cracked bottom spigot -

Fixed -

60/40 lead/tin solder + flux, propane torch to heat just the spigot; original solder wiped off before applying new so that it didn't 'dry joint' due to tin loss.

Gave the whole cooling system another reverse flush because what was drained out was very murky again. Once it was all back together, filled with plain water & pressure tested: pass.

Then drain off the radiator (it wasn't me doing the peeing!) -

and add 5 litre of glycol antifreeze for 50% mix.

Done.

Hi All

It is with heavy heart that I have made the decision to sell my beddie..:o
Firstly I must say that I am indepted to Phil for the huge amount of time and work he has put into restoring her, I wish I could just relax and enjoy travelling around in her but the fact is I would be unable to do so.
Most members here are able to tinker around with their vans but I have no understanding of the workings of an engine and regrettably never will. being able to do that is a huge part of owning a beddie.
I am worried about breaking down in some remote part of Scotland with 2 elderly dogs and ralph who is disabled....and having to await assistance because I can't do anything about it.
I let my heart rule my head when I bought her and now have to face the fact that owning a beddie needs some skills and basic knowledge of mechanics of which I have none
The decision to sell was never my intention, but it has weighed heavy on my mind and i have to do what is right for me.
I hope that no one feels badly of me and its not a case of throwing in the towel at the first hurdle...god knows I have wrestled with this decision. I know there is a huge amount of support on this forum but I can't expect other people to fix my promlems because I can't.
So........if anyone here would like to buy her give me a pm. At the least you know what fantastic work Phil has done as she has been laid bare for all to see...

Margaret

Tough call to make Margaret, i know how much you liked the idea of beddie roaming, but you have to do what's best for you..;)
whilst Phil has been sorting out your few teething problems i've learnt a bit just following it through, i've no doubt the Beddie will find a good home..:D
Basic tool kit required for bedfords BIG hammer/ Little hammer and sticky tape....;]

Margrae - oh no, what a shame, like you say, if you feel anxious that you wouldn't enjoy your van then I think you are making the right decision. But would it not be worthwhile using her just locally for the season to see how you get on or is your decision final? I don't know a huge amount about mechanicing either, often it's get in, fingers crossed and away we go. Don't feel you need a team of mechanics on your tail, there are always breakdown people and there is always a solution to any problem round the corner. A lady with little mechanical knowledge can master a Bedford! but what feels right for you is the best decision.

Margrae - I am with scoobie on this one....

Of course, the final decision is yours and yours alone but remember, your van has had one good going over....chances are that the nasty gremlins have now been found and got at...

And there is always membership of the AA/RAC/whoever....

Its a lovely van - why not use it a little over this summer locally to you (nice motorhome country up there) and see how things go??

We will not cast you out Margrae - whatever your decision;]

Take care
Carl

Hi Guys

Thankyou I appreciate your thoughts....and don't think I haven't given this a lot of thought because I have, deep down I love her but... and there's lies the problem THE BUT......
She is still down in leeds at my sisters house...would she make to Scotland ? yes , no, yes ...who knows, there's really no reason why not but its me thats the problem here.
Phil has been great and if i could abduct him I would !! (its okay Phil, no plans in that direction !) maybe i could move to Haseldon
I can certainly use a hammer big or small but the promlem being is where to give that big thump !!
I follow members trials and tribulations and think to my self ....at least they have some skills to keep their vans going.
I am a member of the AA and RAC but chances are they won't be able to fix it ( past experience with other vehicles !!) Maybe I am just unlucky....a jinx !!
Beddie wants someone that will care for her as she deserves...
So....it leaves me with only one choice I'm afraid or else I'm going to stress myself.
Women ....what are they like ...[bat]

Margaret

Hey, ho, Margrae- I really understand your dilemma, and get concerned myself about the possibility of a breakdown when I have my youngest (autistic) daughter with me, save for one thing- its a mobile home (scuse the phraseology), which is packed with all I need for weeks away! Ive broken down in some interesting places, but have never been short of assistance, AA member or not!
Mechanical knowledge? Extremely limited before I found this site, and I agree that the worry of breaking down never quite goes away... but its the same whatever you drive!
Affter all you work, perhaps a holiday in the Peak District or N York Moors might be an option? Please enjoy it at least once?
Whatever your decision, please do not feel angst about your choice; sentient of others cannot compete against your pragmatic requirements!

Only if you want it to be.
Whatever vehicle you drive, there is always a chance it will break down.Do you really think that a modern vehicle can be fixed at the roadside by the user?
No,too many electronic gizmos!
I am worried about breaking down in some remote part of Scotland with 2 elderly dogs and ralph who is disabled....and having to await assistance because I can't do anything about it.

Being a member of the aa,rac, whatever, gives you the peace of mind to know that if you do break down, you will have someone with you(usually)within the hour. You can expect other people to fix your problems, this is what you pay a yearly subscription to the aa,rac, whatever for!
At the end of the day,you have to decide whether you're going to stop driving altogether,(because the reasons you've given apply to all vehicles),or carry on with what is ostensibly a "brand new" classic vehicle that could give you years of enjoyment.
